Emergency Medicine Physician

Department: Republic of Nauru (RON)
Location: Nauru

Position Location and Details

AMI is looking for a qualified Emergency Medicine Physician to deliver high-quality care and support the development of the R.O.N. Hospital's emergency department in the Republic of Nauru.

Reporting To: Clinical Lead

Assignment Duration: The project duration is between sixty to ninety days, with the possibility of renewal for a longer term. The work schedule will consist of a six-day workweek.

Job Summary: The Emergency Medicine Physician will provide high-quality, front-line care and support to the ongoing development of the emergency department at the R.O.N. Hospital in Nauru. The physician will also play a key role in both direct patient management and capacity building within the department.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely, effective care for a wide range of emergency conditions, including trauma, medical, pediatric, and obstetric emergencies.
  • Lead resuscitations, critical interventions, and stabilization of acutely ill or injured patients.
  • Work closely with local clinicians and nursing staff to ensure safe, evidence-based emergency care.
  • Participate in the triage process and assist in managing patient flow through the emergency department.
  • Support training and mentorship of local emergency care providers and nursing staff.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols, safety standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other departments and hospital leadership to ensure continuity of care and efficient referral pathways.
  • Maintain clear, accurate medical records and participate in data collection for departmental monitoring and evaluation.

Note: The job duties are flexible and subject to change depending upon operational needs.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Provide timely, effective care for a wide range of emergency conditions, including trauma, medical, pediatric, and obstetric emergencies.
  • Lead resuscitations, critical interventions, and stabilization of acutely ill or injured patients.
  • Work closely with local clinicians and nursing staff to ensure safe, evidence-based emergency care.

  • Support training and mentorship of local emergency care providers and nursing staff.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols, safety standards, and quality improvement initiatives.

Education & Experience:

  1. Medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  2. Board-certified or board-eligible in Emergency Medicine (or equivalent training in acute/emergency care).
  3. Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience in emergency medicine, preferably in diverse or resource-limited settings.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires onsite attendance. As such, the ideal candidate will adhere to the designated work schedule within Yaren, Nauru.
