About the Project/Clinic:

AMI will be working with the Republic of Nauru to strengthen healthcare delivery, enhance operational standards, and improve the overall health and wellbeing of the local population.

Job Summary:

As part of AMI’s collaboration with the Nauru Medical Center, we are seeking a qualified and experienced Orthopedic Surgeon to join our multidisciplinary medical team. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive orthopedic surgical care, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. This position is critical to improving access to specialized surgical services for the people of Nauru and contributes to the hospital’s broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery on the island.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform orthopedic assessments, diagnoses, and surgical interventions for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, including fractures, joint dislocations, deformities, and infections.

  • Provide both elective and emergency surgical care, including trauma-related procedures.

  • Oversee pre-operative and post-operative care and collaborate with other specialists for integrated patient management.

  • Conduct outpatient clinics and provide consultation services for referred patients.

  • Supervise and support junior medical staff, nurses, and allied health professionals in orthopedic care.

  • Participate in clinical education, skills transfer, and training for local medical personnel to promote sustainable healthcare capacity.

  • Maintain accurate patient records and contribute to medical audits, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, ethical standards, and local health regulations.

The job duties are flexible and subject to change depending upon operational needs.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team.

  • Excellent communication and time management skills.

  • Must be able to successfully complete the AMI Credentialing Process.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications

Education & Experience:

  • Medical degree from a recognized institution.

  • Board certification or equivalent in Orthopedic Surgery.

  • Valid and unrestricted medical license (eligibility for registration with the Nauru Health Ministry).

  • Minimum seven years of post-specialization experience.

  • Experience working in resource-limited or remote settings is desirable.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to push, pull, reach, and bend frequently.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires onsite attendance. As such, the ideal candidate will adhere to the designated work schedule within Yaren, Nauru.
