About the Project/Clinic:

AMI will be working with the Republic of Nauru to strengthen healthcare delivery, enhance operational standards, and improve the overall health and wellbeing of the local population.

Job Summary:

As part of AMI’s collaboration with the Nauru Medical Center, we are seeking a qualified and experienced Pathologist who will serve as the lead specialist for diagnostic laboratory services at the Republic of Nauru Hospital, providing expert interpretation of laboratory results to support accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. This role is critical to strengthening the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities, improving operational standards, and contributing to better patient outcomes across Nauru’s healthcare system.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Examine and interpret tissue, blood, and body fluid samples to diagnose diseases and guide clinical decision-making

  • Perform autopsies and prepare detailed findings when required

  • Oversee and maintain quality assurance protocols for all pathology services, ensuring compliance with international laboratory standards

  • Provide clinical consultations to physicians and healthcare teams regarding test results and their implications for patient care

  • Collaborate with the medical staff to develop and refine diagnostic testing procedures

  • Train, mentor, and supervise laboratory staff to build local diagnostic capacity

  • Ensure accurate documentation, record-keeping, and reporting of laboratory results in compliance with hospital and public health guidelines

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proven experience with laboratory quality assurance and international diagnostic standards

  • Proficiency in interpreting a wide range of laboratory tests and pathology specimens

  • Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work on a team.

  • Excellent communication and time management skills.

  • Must be able to successfully complete the AMI Credentialing Process.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications

Education & Experience:

  • Medical degree (MD or equivalent) with specialist certification in Pathology

  • Valid, unrestricted license to practice pathology in country of training/origin and eligibility for registration in Nauru

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of post-qualification experience as a Pathologist, preferably in both histopathology and laboratory medicine

  • Read and follow instructions. Demonstrate safe work behavior.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.

  • Must be able to push, pull, reach, and bend frequently.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • This position requires onsite attendance. As such, the ideal candidate will adhere to the designated work schedule within Yaren, Nauru.
