Position Summary
As a Phlebotomist, you will support the Department of Veterans Affairs Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS) by performing blood collection, specimen processing, accessioning, laboratory support activities, and patient interaction services. You will play a vital role in ensuring accurate laboratory testing and exceptional patient care for our nation's Veterans.
Candidates with leadership experience may be considered for Lead Phlebotomist responsibilities, including operational coordination, staff communication, workflow support, and serving as a liaison between laboratory leadership and contract staff.
Key Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture, finger-stick, and other approved specimen collection procedures
Collect, process, label, and accession blood, urine, and other laboratory specimens
Prepare specimens for testing, transport, and delivery in accordance with laboratory standards
Operate laboratory information systems and maintain accurate patient and specimen records
Support laboratory operations, including front desk, clerical, and specimen-processing activities
Maintain inventory, restock supplies, and ensure proper stock rotation
Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety and infection control standards
Collaborate with laboratory staff and healthcare providers to ensure timely and accurate testing services
Follow all quality assurance, regulatory, and laboratory compliance requirements
Provide professional, patient-centered service throughout the specimen collection process
Qualifications
Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience
Current active phlebotomy certification meeting applicable state and federal requirements
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Three professional references from laboratory supervisors, clinical instructors, or physicians validating clinical competency
Strong venipuncture and specimen collection skills
Knowledge of specimen handling, processing, labeling, packaging, and transportation requirements
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to multitask in a fast-paced healthcare environment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and laboratory information systems
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team
Ability to successfully complete the AMI credentialing process
